BMW Car Club of America E31 Chapter – The Voice of E31 Owners

Hello everyone – and Happy Holidays!
The E31 Chapter was a co-sponsor the 2022 SoCal BMW Vintage event November 5th. Joe Hower, E31 Chapter vice president and the SoCal Eights Event Coordinator, set up an early morning meeting point for 8 Series folks attending the SoCal Vintage. When the gates to the event opened, ten E31’s drove on to the show field together. Impressive! Joe captured some great photos, some of which are shown below. This was the 15th year for the SoCal BMW Vintage Meet. A great turn out of vintage BMWs– and E31 owners! Thank you Joe for the event photos!

New Fuels for Internal Combustion Engines (ICE)
I read an interesting article in the December 2022, issue of Octane Magazine regarding environmentally friendly synthetic fuels for internal combustion engines – that is not a typo, synthetic fuels vs gasoline refined from oil out of the ground. Synthetic fuels, which are carbon-neutral, could be an affordable alternative to gasoline pump prices we see today once final development and production facilities are in place. Initial testing of synthetic fuel in carbureted classic/vintage automobiles has been done in the U.K. and these tests have proven very positive. The Octane article goes on to say that a “number of major (automobile) manufacturers are testing it (the synthetic fuel)” for current production automobiles. A key advantage to synthetic fuel, besides being environmentally friendly, is the benefit of meeting exacting quality standards during production – like we see in premium branded synthetic engine oils. In today’s fossil fuel world, the refining quality standards of gasoline vary from market to market. I am sure we will see more on the development of synthetic fuels for our cars in the near term.
