BMW Car Club of America – E31 Chapter
— The Voice of E31 Owners —
February 2022 President’s Update- by Henry Christoff

Hello everyone and welcome to the February edition of the President’s Update!

E31 BREAKING NEWS

From Roger Wray: I am pleased to announce that the E31 850CSi will be included in the M tour in March of this year.

The M tour will be a special tour of BMW Motorsport M cars, and will leave the BMW Spartanburg Factory and BMW CCA
Foundation in Greenville on Thursday morning, March 3 for a trip to the Amelia Island Concours.

BMW has included the 850 CSi as an M car which is a great tribute to the CSi, and officially includes it as an M car (which we all know it was!) in the tour. I was called and asked by BMW but my CSi restoration is not completed, so they asked me to recommend someone. I immediately thought of E31 Chapter member and Activities Director Mike Barrett and his beautiful CSi.

It was easy for BMW to review his car as I had written an article featuring Mike’s 850 CSi which appeared in the January 2021 ROUNDEL. I contacted Mike, and of course he said yes! The tour, sponsored by BMW NA and BMW AG, will be a 2 day drive from the BMW Spartanburg factory to the Amelia Island Concours, with a stop in Savannah, Georgia for the night. There will be press and photographers accompanying the tour. Congrats to Mike on the tour!

HELP WANTED- E31 Chapter Newsletter Editor/Publisher Needed!

As most of you know, Roger Wray, along with the late Steve Cohen, were the founding members of this Chapter. Roger was the first president of our Chapter and has been the E31 Chapter Newsletter Editor / Publisher going on eight years. The time has come that Roger has decided to step down from the position of newsletter editor/publisher.

He has done a fantastic job as our E31 Chapter newsletter guru. I am always receiving positive comments from our members and from people at the National office in Greenville, SC about the quality of the newsletter content and layout.

So today, we are looking for a replacement newsletter editor/publisher.  It’s a volunteer position and one that can be fairly rewarding! Besides producing and publishing our quarterly Chapter newsletter, the editor will prepare and submit content for the E31 section of BimmerLife magazine twice a year. In both cases, usually our E31 Chapter membership will submit content/photos as well as content received from the International E31 Community.

The editor/publisher can also author articles. If you are interested in this position, please reach out to me directly and I will provide the details and responsibilities of this important position on the E31 Chapter Board.

Thank you, Roger, for your unwavering commitment to the E31 community and what has become an excellent body of work over the years as the newsletter editor/publisher!

HEADLAMP ADJUSTER KIT – UPDATE

Unfortunately, after working on this for just over two years we have reached a dead end. Through my contacts at BMW Classic in Munich, BMW North America in New Jersey, Hella in the USA and Hella in Europe, we seem to be unable to bring this part back into production.

These kits fit only the E31’s produced for the US and Canadian markets. Although this has not specifically been communicated to me, it would appear that the cost to produce new tooling coupled with the market specific low demand does not make an economic case to put these kits back into spare parts production.

I want to thank those folks who supplied photographs of the original kit packaging, copies of the BMW North America installation instructions and photos of the kit components. These things were all very helpful.

If someone would like to take up the cause to make the kits themselves using the Stereolithography (SLA) / 3D printing processes, I would be more than happy to forward all the information I have regarding these kits.

Unfortunately, I do not have, nor do I have access to, the engineering drawings for these components.

TYRELL’s CLASSIC WORKSHOP – YouTube Videos

Over the Christmas holiday, I stumbled up this interesting video channel. There is nothing on this channel about our beloved E31s –
so far- but there is a video on an M1 in his shop. He has quite the range of videos from Lamborghini Mura, Ford Capri and
Maserati’s to Ferrari and Jaguar. If you are sitting at home with your computer these winter months, there is no better way to enjoy this time than watching some of these well produced videos. https://www.youtube.com/c/TyrrellsClassicWorkshop/videos

Thank you to renewing member Lee Fields!
